Brady's expletive-filled response to Jim Gray about retirement was probably staged

Don’t fall for the ruse.

On the latest edition of Tom Brady’s “Let’s Go!” Podcast, the all-time great became agitated when host and longtime pal Jim Gray asked him about retirement.

Tom Brady's broadcasting career is already a failure

“Jim, if I knew what I was gonna [expletive] do, I would’ve [expletive] done it,” said Brady. “OK? I’m taking it one day at a time.”

Predictably, Brady’s expletive-laden response drew a big reaction. That’s probably exactly what he wanted.

Since its inception, Brady’s podcast has served as another promotional wing of the TB12 ™ empire. That was apparent last offseason, when Brady used the show to push his 10-part “Man in the Arena” docuseries and talk about how his sudden retirement reflected his desire to spend more time with his family.

Brady’s retirement lasted all of 45 days, by the way.

The notion that Brady would be ambushed on his own podcast is absurd. Gray almost certainly wouldn’t broach a subject that Brady didn’t want to answer.

There are plenty of reasons to believe that Brady’s second free agency tour may lack suitors and interest. The 45-year-old quarterback just finished his worst professional season, and may not be worth the drama.

Nobody seems to believe Brady is actually going to retire this year, especially now that he’s divorced. His devotion to football was the reported crux of his unsalvageable disagreement with Gisele.

But it doesn’t help Brady to fully acknowledge he intends on playing in 2023 — at least not yet. It’s better for the brand to keep up the ambiguity, because it keeps him in the news.

And the best way to make a quick headline is to drop a bunch of F-bombs.
