ESPN could be remaking its “Monday Night Football” booth again, and executives might have their eyes on the greatest of all-time.
That is, if Tom Brady retires and is interested in broadcasting.
Buried deep in the New York Post’s report about ESPN pursuing Al Michaels for its expanded slate of Monday night games is the tidbit that Brady “would really draw interest” for an announcing role if he “somehow” wants to be a TV analyst. While that wording is far from ironclad, it is notable that Brady’s name is mentioned. That probably means he’s been floated as an option on some level, even if the odds of him trading in his pads for a headset are unlikely.
Andrew Marchand also lists Aaron Rodgers and Sean McVay as other pie in the sky candidates. ESPN spoke to McVay about a role on MNF in 2020. Of course, with the Rams on the cusp of playing in their second Super Bowl in four years, that seems far-fetched as well.
Sean Payton, who stepped down Tuesday as coach of the Saints, seems to be a more realistic option.
While Brady appeared on the highly acclaimed ManningCast this season — and was excellent, by the way — it’s long been assumed he has little interest in broadcasting full-time. It seems more likely he’ll focus his energy towards the TB12 and Brady ™ brands. Those $145 joggers aren’t going to sell themselves, you know.
With that said, it makes sense for ESPN to call Brady whenever he decides to retire. Brady already has a relationship with the WorldWide Leader: his new docuseries, “Man in the Arena,” is streaming exclusively on ESPN+. Brady’s production company is also co-producing the upcoming “30 for 30” special on the “The Tuck Rule” game.
Brady may not want to work a full MNF schedule, but he’s shown an increasing interest in building his media empire. It never hurts to place a phone call. In the words of another all-time great, you miss every shot you don't take.
