With the 2020 regular season being over for several weeks, Pro Football Focus is putting out its positional rankings as well as players at these positions.
On Wednesday, PFF put together a list of the top-25 wide outs in the NFL and Jakobi Meyers came in at No. 25.
Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, A.J. Brown, Stefon Diggs and Allen Robinson were the top five.
“Meyers was sneakily one of the most productive wide receivers in the league despite putting up a goose egg in the touchdowns column due to Josh McDaniels pounding the rock in the red zone,” PFF wrote. “The former UDFA generated 2.24 yards per route run, 10th at the position and second among second-year wide receivers behind only A.J. Brown.”
Meyers finished the year with 59 catches for 729 yards, which came after playing just 22 snaps prior to Week 7 and had just one catch for seven yards in those games. Over a 16-game season, 58 catches for 722 yards in 11 games would have been 84 catches for 1,050 yards.
So, is Meyers deserving of being considered a top-25 wide out? Based on his numbers, yes.
Only 18 pass-catchers had more than 1,000 yards receiving on the year and only 17 had more than 84 receptions. The undrafted rookie in 2019 made the most of his opportunities on the field in his second year and should be recognized for that.
But, while the numbers say yes, the reality is he likely isn’t. Going through the NFL rosters around the league, it’s hard to say Meyers would be the No. 1 receiver on almost two-thirds of them.
Still, that isn’t a knock against him.
Meyers proved this season that he can be a solid No. 2/3 NFL receiver and the Patriots can count on him to have a role with the position in 2021.
