There was a time where acquiring Jeurys Familia would’ve been a huge addition to any team. That period is long gone, but that didn’t stop the Red Sox from adding the right-handed reliever on Tuesday.
Familia was recently designated for assignment and released by the Phillies after he posted a 6.09 ERA and 1.85 WHIP in 34 innings this season. His release opened the door for Boston to sign him to a minor league deal, and he will start his Red Sox career with the WooSox.
Familia appeared in 38 games after signing with Philly on a one-year deal worth $6 million in the offseason. For his career, Familia has a 3.46 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 9.5 K/9.
In 2016, Familia was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge that went on to be dismissed. Then with the Mets, Familia was suspended by MLB for violating the league’s domestic violence policy.
