The Mets have gone 3-1 coming out of the All-Star break. Could they be inching back into the playoff picture?
"I think this is what (manager) Mickey Callaway was talking about before the break -- maybe we can be one of those teams that goes on a run here," WFAN's Boomer Esiason said on Wednesday's "Boomer and Gio" show. "And maybe they're in the beginning of a run, winning three out of four."
The Mets still have a lot of ground to make up. After beating the Minnesota Twins 3-2 on Tuesday night, New York is 43-51 and 5 1/2 games out of the second wild-card spot -- only the Miami Marlins trail them in the overall National League standings.
Gregg Giannotti said it's too early to talk about the Mets contending.
"It's hard for me, and this was really my fear a couple of weeks ago is that (general manager) Brodie Van Wagenen was going to try to squeeze every ounce out of this team that doesn't have a shot, that we were going to get lulled into a false sense of security that they can compete and all of a sudden you're hanging on to all these guys for no reason whatsoever," Gio said.
"Edwin Diaz still stinks, Robinson Cano still stinks, the bullpen had a nice night last night even though Diaz tried to give it up, but I'm sorry, get to .500 and then we'll talk," he added.
"You can be happy about that (Tuesday's win), but don't tell me how they're going to be back into the race," Giannotti continued. "They're still eight games under .500."
Added Esiason: "I understand that, but you've got to start somewhere."
