"Futile, inept, pathetic."
That's how WFAN's Boomer Esiason described the Mets' offense Tuesday morning. On Monday night, New York lost its fourth straight game, 4-0 to the Padres.
The Mets have dropped nine of their last 12 games and have scored just seven runs in their last six games.
On Monday, Padres rookie pitcher Chris Paddack allowed just four hits over 7 2/3 innings and struck out 11 batters.
"Another just horrendous performance by the Met offense just sitting there, swinging at high strikes, flailing at changeups," Esiason said on the "Boomer and Gio" show. "This kid Paddack just owned them last night."
Before Paddack's gem, the right-hander said he was "coming for" Pete Alonso, the Mets' first baseman who was named National League Rookie of the Month for April.
Alonso, who suggested that Paddack might've been jealous he didn't win the award, went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
"Alonso, I thought other than at the plate, he handled it fine," said Esiason's co-host, Gregg Giannotti. "But it's just extra frustrating where this guy Paddack before the game is now basically calling him out, calling out the Mets, saying, 'I'm going to show that I'm the big dog.' And he goes out there and does it. I mean, he mowed them down last night."
After starting the season 9-4, the Mets are now just 16-19 -- 3 1/2 games behind the NL East-leading Phillies.
Boomer and Gio agreed the Mets' woes feel a lot like last season, when the team got off to a promising start and then lost eight of their first nine games in May.
"(General manager) Brodie Van Wagenen now, if he believes his team is a National League East winner, then you better do something soon before you're completely out of it because that's where they're trending," Giannotti said.
