Gio On Brady-Patriots Divorce: 'An Absolutely Fascinating Storyline'

Tom Brady's departure from New England is a fascinating storyline for the 2020 NFL season, WFAN's Gregg Giannotti said Tuesday.

The six-time Super Bowl champion quarterback announced in a statement Tuesday on his social media accounts that his "football journey will take place elsewhere."

"From the standpoint of things being exciting and a storyline and the drama and the soap opera that is the NFL, I like it for that standpoint because it's fun," Giannotti said on the "Boomer and Gio" show just after the news broke. "But from a traditionalist standpoint of Tom Brady -- the greatest quarterback we've seen, all the Super Bowl championships, the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick -- I would like to have seen him finish as a New England Patriot, that part of me. But I'm not going to lie, where Tom Brady's going now and if he's going to succeed in that place is a fascinating story to me. It's an absolutely fascinating storyline, and also this is the end -- and we'll see how the Patriots deal with it, but this is the end of that dynasty for real now."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Brady is expected to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next season. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Buccaneers and Los Angeles Chargers have made strong offers, believed to be at least $30 million a year.

Boomer Esiason, Giannotti's co-host, said, "It'll be interesting to see him with another coach, in another uniform, with other players not nearly as detailed as it was in New England all these years."

Esiason added that there are things for Brady to like about the Bucs and Chargers, but also concerns about the competition within their divisions.

"There are good players on offense and defense for both of those teams," Esiason said. "The problem with the Chargers is they play in the AFC West, and you've got Patrick Mahomes sitting out there. So it ain't going to be like the easy pathway to the division crown like it has been in the AFC East.

"And then down in the NFC South, you've got New Orleans you've got to play twice."

To that, Giannotti said: "Is he afraid of anybody? He's never been afraid of anybody."

"He's not, but I think he's looking for a payday, and I also think he'd like to have one last laugh at the feet of Bill Belichick," Esiason responded.
