After the first day of free agency, WFAN's Gregg Giannotti, a Knicks fan, was experiencing some strange emotions.
Giannotti was against the Knicks offering a max contract to Kevin Durant after the 10-time All-Star ruptured his Achilles tendon in the NBA Finals, but the "Boomer and Gio" co-host is jealous that the Brooklyn Nets will sign Durant.
The Nets also reportedly landed Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan in the opening hours of free agency.
"Today still stings, and I don't know exactly why," Giannotti said on Monday morning's show. "It's because I think, if I'm trying to figure out inside of my brain why I feel this way, it's because I'm slowly coming to the realization that the Knicks may never be good in my lifetime because everybody in the NBA thinks that they're an incompetent mess. And nothing is going to change that unless they win somehow, and I don't think they're ever going to win again."
Boomer Esiason said losing out on Durant and Irving looks bad "from a perception standpoint" for the Knicks, who didn't even get a meeting with either free agent. But Boomer said Sunday's developments speak volumes about the Brooklyn Nets.
"It also, in another way, I think, cements the fact that (general manager) Sean Marks has been here for 3 1/2 years and he has worked wonders with the Nets, rebuilding the Nets and trying to get the Nets into a position where they would be where they are at the start of free agency where they could go out and get two guys -- actually three guys because they're going to add DeAndre Jordan as well," Esiason said.
"And when you think about the Nets, you're talking about probably prior to this moment, maybe the smallest fan base in all of the NBA even though it's in one of the biggest cities in America, and a lack of interest and not great support at the gate and all that other stuff. Now all of a sudden that changes because, I think, Sean Marks is a very, very smart basketball front-office guy. And I do believe that there is a competency that is associated with him because of his background that players see, that agents see, and that's why Kyrie, Kevin and DeAndre all end up here."
