According to Kimberly Jones of NFL Network and WFAN, Corey Ballentine will not be attending the Giants’ rookie camp.

The former Washburn standout cornerback was wounded in a shooting in Topeka, Kansas during the early morning hours following the conclusion of the 2019 NFL Draft. Teammate Dwane Simmons was killed in the shooting.

General manager Dave Gettleman initially expected Ballentine to attend the camp.

"He's a really bright kid and he's a great kid," Gettleman said. "What happened is tragic and unfortunate. That's his best friend he was with. We spoke to him on Sunday. He's coming along fine. He'll be here Thursday for the minicamp this weekend."

Instead, the Giants have now encouraged the 23-year-old to stay with his family and friends during a time of mourning.

Ballentine has been released from the hospital and is in the process of recovering at home.

The Giants were impressed by Ballentine’s showing at the 2019 Senior Bowl and selected him 180th overall in the sixth round.

Washburn University held a candlelight vigil for Simmons on Tuesday night.
