Dave Anderson, a sports columnist for The New York Times for more than three decades and recipient of a Pulitzer Price for commentary, died on Thursday. He was 89.

Anderson's death at an assisted living center was announced by his son Stephen. He lived for many years in Tenafly, NJ.

Anderson's Pulitzer Prize was rare for a sportswriter to receive. He was just the third sportswriter ever to win one, which happened in 1981.

Mike Francesa opened his show on WFAN Thursday talking about Anderson and how he was a big part of his radio program along with Chris 'Mad Dog' Russo over the 30 years he has been on WFAN.

"One of our guests, who was on with us so many times you couldn't even count. Dave Anderson graced this show 100 to 200 times over the years of the show, countless times...at fights, big events, Super Bowls, Giants playoff games, big Giants game. When people would fight, he was above it. He was a Pulitzer Price winner. He was a wordsmith. He was a good storyteller. He told a million great stories on this show. He was a big part of our show on so many occassons. I sent to Dave and his family our condolences and our prayers. He was one of the great sportswriters of all time."
