When it rains, it pours.
Such is the case for the Yankees in 2019.
After Gary Sanchez was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier Friday, the team got another discouraging medical update on one of its other key contributors.
Dellin Betances' simulated game did not go well Thursday, and the reliever has gone back to New York to undergo another MRI, manager Aaron Boone told reporters Friday afternoon.
Thursday was just the second time Betances faced hitters since being shut down with shoulder inflammation on March 19.
It's another tough blow for the Yankees, as the team felt that the 31-year-old was progressing towards a return.
Through the first 12 games of the season, New York's bullpen owns a 3.97 ERA in 45.1 innings. Other than Masahiro Tanaka, the team's four other starters have averaged just 4.1 innings per start, which has caused Boone to turn to his bullpen more often than he would like in the first few weeks of the season.
Betances had a 2.70 ERA and 1.050 WHIP in 66 games last season, striking out 115 batters in only 66.2 innings.
New York's talented set-up man is set to become a free agent following the 2019 season.
