NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Ross Cockrell, who started nine games at cornerback for the Giants last season, is moving on.

The 26-year-old defensive back has signed a two-year contract with the Carolina Panthers, his agents said. ESPN reported the deal is worth $6.8 million.

The Giants acquired Cockrell in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers just before last year's season opener. The 6-foot, 191-pounder had 50 tackles and three interceptions in 2017.

By signing with the Panthers, Cockrell is returning home. He attended high school in Charlotte and played at Duke University.

After releasing Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie earlier this month, the Giants are thin at cornerback, with Janoris Jenkins and Eli Apple as the likely starters if the season were to begin today.
