Just days after announcing that he has been cancer-free for four months, former Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is going back to work.

The Oakland Athletics are hiring Alderson as Senior Adviser to Baseball Operations, the A's announced on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

Alderson, 71, stepped away from the Mets last summer after eight years with the team in order to receive treatment upon his cancer returning.

The longtime baseball executive had been battling cancer since at least 2015.

Alderson served as general manager of the A's from 1983-1997, and will return to Oakland 30 years after leading the A's to a World Series Championship.

He also mentored Billy Beane, who would eventually replace him as GM in Oakland and has since been promoted to executive vice president of baseball operations.
