Jay Bruce will finally return to the Mets for the final five weeks of a lost 2018 season. Bruce was activated off the DL Friday after missing more than two months with a hip injury. He hit .360 during his seven-game rehab assignment with Class A St. Lucie.
To make room for the outfielder/first baseman, the Mets sent first baseman Dominic Smith back down to AAA Las Vegas.
They also sent down shortstop Jack Reinheimer and recalled catcher Thomas Nido.
Prior to hitting the DL in June, Bruce was having the worst season of his career, hitting just .212 with three homers and 17 RBI. He will likely play some outfield and a little first base the rest of the season. The Mets hope he can show that he some value in case they want to show him in a trade for a bad contract that might match up with a team needing a right fielder.
Smith once again did not see much of an opportunity here after getting recalled last weekend. He only got six at bats, which included a homer. Smith takes his .195 average this season with just two homers and three RBI back to AAA Las Vegas before he ultimately rejoins the Mets once the minor league season ends in early September.
