The Mets offense has been abysmal the last week, scoring just seven runs in six games. They badly need to turn it around. Friday, they may be getting a much-need bat in the lineup.
According to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo, Jed Lowrie could be activated from the injured list for the Mets series opener at Citi Field Friday against the Marlins. Lowrie has yet to play this season as he works his way back from a left knee capsule strain. Lowrie is expected to start at third base and send Todd Frazier to the bench.
The Mets also announced Tuesday that newest acquisition Wilmer Font will make a spot start for Steven Matz Wednesday afternoon against the Padres in San Diego. Font is taking Corey Oswalt's spot on the roster as he was demoted back to triple-A Syracuse. Font has not made a start this season and has a 5.79 ERA in relief in 14 innings for the Rays.
Font will be stretched out to throw around 75 pitches. Font pitched well in five starts in 2018 for the Rays, but never tossed more than 5 2/3 innings in any of those starts. Font could be a candidate to get a few spot starts if he pitches well, considering Jason Vargas is on the IL and Matz is still a question mark with his forearm injury.
