The Jets have added a backup for star running back Le'Veon Bell.
New York has agreed to a one-year deal with former Packers RB Ty Montgomery, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Montgomery averaged 4.6 yards per carry on 41 rush attempts in 2018, totaling 188 yards and a touchdown in 13 games between the Packers and Ravens. He added 25 receptions for 235 yards.
Green Bay traded the 26-year-old back to Baltimore during the season for a 2020 seventh-round pick.
Montgomery was drafted by the Packers in the third round (94th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.
The 6-foot-0, 216-pound back started his career as a wide receiver before transitioning to running back midway through the 2016 campaign, the strongest season of his four-year career. Montgomery took 77 carries for 457 yards (5.9 yards per carry) and three touchdowns that year while adding 44 receptions for 348 yards.
Montgomery also has experience as a kick returner, averaging 22.7 yards per return on 35 attempts during his career.
The Jets signed Bell to a 4-year, $52.5 million contract, with $27 million guaranteed, at the start of free agency.
Montgomery will join Bell, Elijah McGuire, Trenton Cannon and De'Angelo Henderson as the running backs on New York's roster.
