A big key for the Yankees in the American League Championship Series will be whether their hitters can work deep into counts against the Astros' top two pitchers, John Flaherty says.
Appearing on the "Boomer and Gio" show Friday morning, Flaherty, a YES Network analyst and former Yankees catcher, said the Bombers need to get to the Astros' bullpen as quickly as possible.
"The Yankees are going to have to find a way to get pitch counts up against (Gerrit) Cole and (Justin) Verlander," Flaherty said. "You're not going to go out there and string together four hits against those guys. You're going to have to get pitch counts up. You're going to have to hope for mistakes. When you get one, you're going to have to do some damage. But again, it's going to be all about the bullpen guys for the Houston Astros."
The Astros might have the better rotation, but the Yankees clearly have the better relievers, Flaherty said.
"(Roberto) Osuna, their closer, doesn't scare me," he said. "I don't think he scares the Yankees. You don't feel like it's an over game once you get to the end of it."
Flaherty said he expects Yankees manager Aaron Boone to deploy his bullpen much in the same way he did during the AL Division Series sweep of the Twins.
"The Yankees, in my opinion, have to take Game 1 in Houston with (Zack) Greinke out on the mound," he said. "If they do that, I think they win this in seven."
Game 1 will be played at 8:08 p.m. Saturday at Houston's Minute Maid Park.
