Yankees guest instructor Lee Mazzilli will spend another night in the hospital after being struck in the head by a ball during batting practice Wednesday.
Mazzilli, 63, was working in Tampa, Florida, with players not on the travel roster for Wednesday's game against the Houston Astros in West Palm Beach.
A team spokesman said Thursday that doctors are "just being cautious" with Mazzilli, who is reportedly "in good spirits."
A Brooklyn native, Mazzilli played 14 years in the majors, including parts of 10 seasons with the Mets. He was an All-Star in 1979 and was a member of the Mets' World Series-winning team in 1986. He also played in 32 games for the Yankees in 1982.
Mazzilli was the Yankees' first-base coach under Joe Torre from 2000-03 and then bench coach in 2006, winning another ring in 2000. He was the Baltimore Orioles' manager from 2004-05.
Mazzilli's son, L.J., is a second baseman in the Yankees organization. He spent 2018 with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after being acquired earlier in the season in a rare trade with the Mets.
