LOOK: Mets' Yoenis Cespedes Takes Reps at First Base

Especially in Spring Training (or, this year, Summer Camp), it's not rare for established MLB players to take reps at other positions, whether that be shagging fly balls during BP or working hard at an alternate spot just in case a need arise.

That said, what SNY cameras captured at Citi Field on Wednesday morning may be something worth watching: Yoenis Cespedes taking some reps at first base.

Cespedes has missed the majority of the last two seasons with a slew of leg issues, but both he and Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen have been optimistic that, at the very least, he should be ready to be a designated hitter option for the team come Opening Day. And, we already know he's been ready for the PGA TOUR, at least.

That said, even in a universal DH world, flexibility is never a bad thing, and there are questions of how effective Cespedes can be as an outfielder. The Mets are well-stocked out there without him, and of course, have reigning Rookie of the Year Pete Alonso entrenched at first with Dominic Smith and Matt Adams, among others, as depth options – but as the Yankees learned a few years ago, you're only an injury or six away from having to have a middle infielder or corner outfielder learn first base on the fly in the Majors.
