Matt Harvey will try to resurrect his career as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.
The Mets announced Tuesday that they traded the 29-year-old right-hander to Cincinnati for catcher Devin Mesoraco. The Mets and Reds play Tuesday night in Cincinnati.
General manager Sandy Alderson announced Friday that Harvey was being designated for assignment after the pitcher rejected a demotion to the minor leagues. The move was officially made Saturday.
Harvey was once the Mets' brightest young star and enjoyed successful seasons in 2013 and 2015. But he has struggled mightily over the past three seasons, going 9-17 with a 5.78 ERA. The Mets moved him from the starting rotation to the bullpen last month before unsuccessfully trying to send him down to the minor leagues.
This season, Harvey is 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA.
Other teams that reportedly expressed interest in Harvey were the Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants.
Mesoraco, 30, has spent parts of eight seasons with the Reds. In 18 games this year, he is hitting .220 with one home run and three RBIs. Mesoraco was an All-Star in 2014, when he batted .273 with 25 homers.
Catcher has been arguably the Mets' biggest weakness since losing Travis d'Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki to injuries in the same week. Jose Lobaton and Tomas Nido have been splitting time behind the plate.
The Mets also announced Tuesday that third baseman Todd Frazier has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.
