Callaway On DeGrom's Streak Of Quality Starts: 'It's Been Unbelievable'

By WFAN.com

Mets fans are already excited about the 2019 season, as their team has jumped out to an early 5-2 start.

While several players have contributed significantly to those wins, no player has looked more impressive than Jacob deGrom.

Fresh off his historic 2018 campaign, deGrom has picked up right where he left off last year. Through his first two starts, the ace has thrown 13 scoreless innings, surrendering just eight hits and two walks while racking up a whopping 24 strikeouts. After another dominating performance in his most recent outing, the 30-year-old matched Bob Gibson's Major League record of 26 straight quality starts.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway joined "Mike's On" Friday to chat about his ace's amazing start to the 2019 season and his special streak of consecutive starts.

"He almost looks better (so far this season)..." Callaway told Mike Francesa about last year's NL Cy Young Award winner. "He just broke the major league record for starts with three runs or less. You can't get more consistent than that. It's been unbelievable.

"I think it's because he attacks relentlessly. He's always ahead in the count so he's never putting himself in a position where he walks a guy and then gives up a homer. He's consistently putting the pressure on the hitter... he's hit as many homers as he's given up in his last 42 innings. That's unbelievable.

The season is only a week old, but the Mets have been enjoying a relatively healthy lineup thus far.

Only two major contributors have yet to make their 2019 debuts, and according to Callaway, both may be returning soon.

Veteran infielders Todd Frazier and Jed Lowrie both suffered injuries during spring training. Frazier missed the entire Grapefruit League season after straining his left oblique soon after arriving in Florida, while Lowrie has been out with a left knee capsule sprain since late February.

Lowrie still has some ways to go in his rehab before he joins the team, but it may not be long before we see Frazier back in the lineup.

"We know that Frazier and Lowrie will be back at some point, probably in the near future..." Callaway said Friday evening. "I think they're getting close. Frazier is a little bit closer than Lowrie. I think he's playing six innings today or tomorrow. He's feeling good, getting at-bats and playing third and first so he has those options when he comes back.

"You guys will see him soon, and then Lowrie will not be far behind."
