A win against the Yankees has at least helped the Mets turn back towards the right direction.
The Mets have two wins in a row on the back of a couple weeks filled with frustration and drama both on and off the field. Now, the Mets will hope to complete a two-game sweep of the Yankees at Citi Field as they continue to try to push closer in the race for playoff positioning.
Manager Mickey Callaway joined Kim Jones and John Jastremski, who were filling in for Mike Francesa, before Wednesday night's game with the Yankees. Callaway still thinks his team can reach the playoffs.
"We're not out of anything yet," said Callaway. "We've got some work to do to catch up, but I still believe this team can get to where it wants to be."
The Mets are 11 games behind the Atlanta Braves, so the NL West is probably out of their hands at this point, but they're not completely out of touch from the wild-card spots yet. Philadelphia currently occupies the first wild-card place, while the Cubs are in the second. New York has the third-worst record in the National League but is just six games behind Chicago.
Things aren't over yet, but the Mets will have to improve drastically if they are to recover enough to reach the postseason.
Callaway seemed encouraged by his team's recent play. He specifically pointed to the Mets' recent success finishing games as a reason to be optimistic about their chances.
"We're putting full games together. We've had some trouble with the bullpen, and I think we rely on our starters more than anyone else in the league. We need to continue to work on that consistency from start to finish."
Callaway's bullpen has been arguably the worst in Major League Baseball. This season has been so frustrating for the Mets partially because they have had plenty of leads late in games, but bullpen collapses have become far too commonplace. The team leads the league in blown saves, with 21 on the season so far.
Despite all that, the Mets players still haven't let their heads drop. Effort certainly isn't their issue.
