Mike Francesa Doesn't Want To Overreact To Giants Win Over 'Brutal' Redskins Team

Things were looking dour when the Giants started the season 0-2, but now they’ve won two games in a row with a new franchise QB at the helm.

New York is now 2-2 after a 24-3 victory over the Washington Redskins. Daniel Jones wasn’t as impressive as he was in his debut, but he didn’t have to be. The Redskins played poorly and allowed the Giants to earn the lopsided win.

Pat Shurmur’s team’s 2-2 record has some pundits and fans wondering if the team can make a run at the playoffs, but Mike Francesa isn’t at that point yet. Francesa opened his Monday show on WFAN by expressing his hesitation in praising the Giants after a win over such a bad team.

“A lot of people are acting like the Giants turned it around,” Francesa said. “Listen, they’re a missed field goal from being 1-3. Beating the Redskins, I’m just going to wait a little while before I’m ready to go crazy about the Giants based on what I saw from the Redskins. The Redskins were brutal yesterday.”

The Miami Dolphins have been frequently mentioned as the worst team in the NFL, but the Redskins are starting to get more attention in that conversation. Washington was close to beating the Eagles in Week 1, but since then they’ve reeled off three straight double-digit losses.

The Redskins seemed to be especially hopeless on Sunday. Case Keenum struggled to start the game, so head coach Jay Gruden opted to give Dwayne Haskins his NFL debut midway through the second quarter. Haskins also struggled heavily, and his three interceptions made the Giants defense look better than it has at any point in the early days of this campaign.

Francesa pointed out that Haskins, unlike Jones, clearly wasn’t ready to play.

“You knew that coach did not want to play that quarterback, and that quarterback showed exactly why. I mean, he didn’t have a clue what to do.”

Francesa expects the Giants to come back down to earth a bit due to their difficult schedule over the next few weeks, but he also stressed that the season is still primarily about Jones’ growth.

“You have to be realistic here. They’re 2-2, which means they get a fresh start … eventually this year will come down to his development, not to wins and losses … but the fact that they got to get to 2-2 gives them at least a chance to take a deep breath and dream. And listen, there will be some cold water splashed on it in the names of the Vikings and the Pats in the next ten days.”
