Francesa Gets Into Fiery Debate Over 'Kansas City Model'

Mike Francesa was fired up when a caller brought up the Giants wanting to follow the "Kansas City model."

Sparked by NFL MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs led the NFL with 425.6 yards of total offense per game last season.

To compare the 12-4 Chiefs to the 5-11 Giants set off the WFAN host.

"It's ridiculous – there's no Kansas City model," Francesa reacted. "The Giants won eight games (over) the last two years."

The Giants ranked 17th overall with 356.1 yards of total offense per game last season. After winning Super Bowl XLVI, the franchise entered a decline.

"Everyone's beating on the Giants now," Francesa said. "It's become very fashionable to beat on the Giants now. Listen, I completely understand. The Giants have screwed everything up. This is an ownership thing because the guys who were beginning to mess it up left. The Giants come off their second Super Bowl, which was a crowning achievement. They were riding as high as anybody could ride. Tom (Coughlin) and Eli (Manning) were legends."

Francesa pinpointed 2014 as the year where Big Blue's costly decisions spiraled into a downfall.

"Instead of stepping back and doing it the right way – they tried to piecemeal it," Francesa explained. "That was where they made their mistake. 2014 is where they made their colossal mistakes. It started with the change in the offensive philosophy, which made no sense. You won two Super Bowls. Why would you change your offensive philosophy? That made no sense."

Are the high-powered Chiefs the model for the rebuilding Giants to follow? Not according to Francesa.

"Kansas City hasn't been to a Super Bowl in 50 years, using the Kansas City model," Francesa said. "Kansas City hasn't been to a Super Bowl in 50 years! The Giants have won four in half that time going from 1986 forward. They've been in five and won four."
