Francesa On Yankees' Slow Start: 'Calm Down, It's April'

By WFAN.com

The Yankees entered the 2019 season with high expectations.

Last year's squad finished the campaign with 100 wins, and after several additions to the roster during the offseason, many believed this year's team could easily beat that win total.

However, this season has not gotten off to the start that anyone had expected. 12 different role players are currently on the injured list, which has played a significant role in the team jumping out to a sluggish, 6-9 start.

Mike Francesa began Tuesday's "Mike's On" discussing New York's poor first month of the season, and despite the losing record, Francesa said there is no reason to be concerned.

"When you hear words like 'crucial,' when you hear words like 'telling,' when you hear words like 'incredibly important series,' whoever said it, or if you read it, they wrote it, they said it, laugh at them," Francesa said to open Tuesday's show. "This is April 16th. April 16th. We haven't even had any days that are warm yet. We are a couple of weeks into the season."

It's been a strange start to the 2019 campaign, as the Yankees are 6-9 thus far while the Red Sox currently sit at 6-11.

The reigning World Series Champions have been a bigger mess than their division rivals, racking up a run differential of -32 through the first 17 games of the season.

While New York and Boston have struggled, Tampa Bay has jumped out to an MLB-best 12-4 record and sit atop the American League East with a 5.5 game cushion over the Yankees.

Regardless of the expectations before the season started or where the team currently sits in the standings, Francesa says it is way too early to begin worrying about the Yankees.

"Baseball is forever. I've seen Yankees teams counted out in August that have come back from 13 games to win the pennant. The idea that you're going to talk about 'crucial games' on the 16th of April is just absolutely for the sake of trying to be dramatic, or just the dumbest thing that ever happened.

"It's baseball. They have played a handful of games... But calm down. It's April. Not only that, it's April 16th. You won't even remember what happened on April 16th."
