Originally brought up through the Mets' minor league system, Gomez played his rookie season in New York in 2007. He was then sent to the Minnesota Twins in the January 2008 trade that brought Johan Santana to Flushing.
Gomez, 33, has spent 12 seasons in the majors, also playing for the Brewers, Astros, Rangers and Rays. He's a two-time All-Star whose best seasons came with Milwaukee in 2013 and 2014, when he batted .284 both years with 24 and 23 home runs, respectively.

“It’s a dream," Gomez told reporters. "(I) came back to the team that you started my career. (I have) a lot of good memories. It’s exciting and I’m anxious.
“My goal is be a part of this team," Gomez continued. "Make the team and help, and I believe to see what we have in this clubhouse is a special team that can win.”
In 118 games last season with Tampa Bay, he hit .208 with nine homers and 32 RBIs.
