While Jets’ fans have called for head coach Adam Gase to be fired less than a full-season into his New York tenure, team owner Christopher Johnson made it clear Wednesday, the team has no plans of making a rash decision like that.
Gase spoke to reporters during his Thursday press conference and acknowledged he appreciates the support from Johnson.
“It has not gone the way obviously we wanted. We got a lot of games left. Our job’s to improve this team and go out and try to win games every week,” Gase said.
“(Christopher Johnson) is with us through every step with our communication with him. So, he kind of knows what we’ve been trying to do, how to try to fix things that are wrong. So, to get his support and for him to kind of see what we’re trying to do, that’s an important step for us.”
The Jets are at the bottom of their division with a 2-7 record and Gase’s offense has failed to display any sort of consistent competence. Quarterback Sam Darnold has seemingly regressed and All-Pro running back Le’Veon Bell has struggled behind a subpar offensive line.
“These guys haven’t changed,” Gase added Thursday. “They’ve been the same since we started. It’s a group of guys that just work. They are trying to get things corrected from the mistakes we make. Every week the effort has been really high in practice and games. They are trying to do right.”
After beating the Giants in Week 10, the Jets will next play at Washington against the 1-8 Redskins. In their last 30 games, the Jets have earned back-to-back victories just once.
