April 9, 2019 The former St. John’s star and Basketball Hall of Famer just wrapped up his fourth — and most successful season — leading the Red Storm. St. John’s went 21-13 and reached its first NCAA Tournament under Mullin before losing to Arizona State in a FIrst Four game.Coincidentally, Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley is expected to be the Red Storm’s top target to replace Mullin, sources told Rothstein.It’s not clear why Mullin, who went 59-73 in his four seasons at his alma later, is planning to resign but there has reportedly been friction between him and the administration. However, athletic director Mike Cragg tried to quell speculation that the 55-year-old could be on the way out by issuing a statement that said: “Let me be clear and I said from the start, Coach Mullin is our head coach and we are not looking for another head coach.”
