Just two days into training camp, and the Giants' wide receiver depth is already being tested.
The Giants announced Friday that wide receiver Corey Coleman suffered a torn ACL during Thursday's practice. Big Blue also lost receiver Sterling Shepard to a broken thumb Thursday, the first day of training camp practices.
Shepard, who will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, is expected to take it easy during training camp and the preseason to get ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Coleman's season, however, is over before it started.
The Giants signed Coleman, 25, to their practice squad last October. He was later promoted to the active roster and played in eight games, making five receptions for 71 yards. The Giants re-signed him as a restricted free agent during the offseason.
The 15th overall pick of the 2016 draft by the Browns, Coleman had 56 catches for 718 yards and five touchdowns in two seasons in Cleveland. The speedster was traded to Buffalo in August 2018 but was later waived. The Patriots then signed and released him twice.
The Giants' depth chart at wide receiver also includes Golden Tate, Cody Latimer, Bennie Fowler, Russell Shepard, Alonzo Russell, Brittan Golden and Da’Mari Scott. The team is planning to work out former Panthers and Bills wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin and rookie Flynn Nagel from Northwestern.
