A Day Later, Hardly Any Traces Of Small Fire At Citi Field

A day after a small fire caused minimal damage at Citi Field, there were hardly any traces of the blaze.

The fire broke out around 3:45 p.m. in a display case in the Jackie Robinson Rotunda near the stadium's main entrance, officials said. Citi Field's sprinkler system kicked in and extinguished the flames before about 60 firefighters arrived on the scene, according to officials. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. A witness tweeted video showing flames near the gates and heavy smoke billowing from the ballpark. That same witness wrote:  "Unsure what happened but I heard a loud blast at Citi Field and then saw smoke and this fire. Hoping for everyone's safety."

The Mets played in Atlanta on Wednesday. They'll host the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night. Citi Field workers told the New York Post they were confident they'd have the mess cleaned up before the game. And on Thursday, Newsday reported that the only sign of the fire was several sheets of paper warning of wet paint.

Some media had fun with the story. The Daily News' back page used the headline "ABLAZIN'" with the subhead "Just when you thought things couldn't get worse for Mets, the stadium catches fire." It showed a superimposed photo of Mr. Met standing in front of the fire with his hands over his eyes.

The Washington Post used the headline "No, the fire at New York Mets' Citi Field did not involve a dumpster" after some social media jokesters tied the blaze to the team's recent struggles.
