Cowboys great DeMarcus Ware stopped by the "Boomer and Gio" show Wednesday and discussed his former team, which just so happens to be the Giants' Week 1 opponent Sunday.

Earlier Wednesday, the Cowboys and star running back Ezekiel Elliott reportedly agreed to a six-year, $90 million contract extension.

"I think that's the best news that the Cowboys could've heard for just the team in general, especially going into these big NFC East games," said Ware, a four-time All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowl linebacker who retired after the 2016 season. "You've got Washington. You've got the Giants the first game. You've got to be able to run the football. That is a run-the-football conference. And with Zeke being back, that takes a lot of pressure off of (quarterback) Dak (Prescott). He can play like he needs to play, and they can win some football games."

The Cowboys have locked up a few of their stars in recent weeks, include offensive tackle La'el Collins and linebacker Jaylon Smith. Prescott could be the next to receive his big payday. Is he worth the $30 million to $35 million a year he's expected to command?

"I think Dak is worth that amount of money if he starts throwing the football a lot more. And I'm being honest," said Ware, who added that he loves Prescott. "If you are a quarterback that's going to put everything on your shoulders, you need to throw the football a lot more and manage a game to a point to where you can put any running back back there and you can win football games.

"You've got to have that two-headed monster with Dak and with Zeke. And if you get both of those guys on the same page, I mean the sky's the limit," added Ware, who won a Super Bowl with the Broncos after the 2015 season.

On the other side of the ball, the Cowboys' defense finished last season ranked seventh in the league and has some young stars that include Smith, Leighton Vander Esch and DeMarcus Lawrence.

"I think this is the youngest, most talented defense that they've had in a long time, and those guys can run around," Ware said. "You can see that they don't hold anything back. And you can see that (defensive coordinator Rod) Marinelli actually is not being conservative, as he usually is, and he's actually blitzing a lot more. And so I think that now he has a lot more confidence in their defense, and they can win football games with that defense."
