ESPN analyst and Mets adviser Jessica Mendoza was involved in a "scary" car crash Friday that kept her out of the booth for the "Sunday Night Baseball" broadcast of the Giants-Phillies game in San Francisco.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported Sunday that Mendoza's car was rear-ended at full speed on a Southern California freeway.
"Ever a champ, she made every effort to be in the booth tonight but the much better decision was to rest and recover with her family," tweeted ESPN Communications Director Ben Cafardo, who described the accident as a "scary ordeal."
Cafardo added that ESPN is hoping Mendoza, 38, can return for the Aug. 18 Cubs-Pirates game in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Mendoza was a four-time All-American outfielder at Stanford. As a member of the national softball team, she won a gold medal in Athens in 2004 and a silver medal in Beijing 2008.
