With no Minor League Baseball being played this summer, minor-leaguers are allowed to play for independent league teams if the parent team approves the loan – and, former minor-leaguers who may have been released from their previous organizations are also flocking to the indy leagues.
The Yankees have already seen the latter, as right-hander Cale Coshow made his debut for the American Association's Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks over the weekend, pitching a scoreless inning.
Coshow, 28, was the Yankees' 13th-round pick in 2013 and spent seven years in the organization, including part of 2017 and all of 2018 at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He started in Triple-A again in 2019, but underwent Tommy John surgery last May and missed most of the season.
He became a minor-league free agent in November and was not re-signed, but apparently was healthy enough to sign with the Redhawks and make his debut last Friday, pitching a 1-2-3 first inning in their 14-2 win over Chicago.
