Former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur didn't take too much time to find his new team.
Nearly two weeks after his Giants tenure abruptly ended, Shurmur will join Vic Fangio's coaching staff in Denver and serve as the Broncos' offensive coordinator. He was considered to be a "strong candidate" for the vacancy following Rich Scangarello's firing on Jan. 12, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
He failed to lead New York to the playoffs as Shurmur finished with nine wins and 23 losses, including a 4-12 finish in 2019. Giants brass fired Shurmur — and retained general manager Dave Gettleman — in what owner John Mara called a "difficult decision" in order to create a fresh start.
As each coaching vacancy was filled, the 54-year-old decided to return to his role as a coordinator. He reportedly generated interest from around the league. Shurmur's deal is expected to be for two years, according to 9News' Mike Klis.
Shurmur, who was last an offensive coordinator with Minnesota in 2017, is tasked with leading a underwhelming Broncos offense.
Denver tallied 298.9 yards and 17.6 points per game during the 2019 season — fifth worst among NFL teams. Shurmur will work alongside Drew Lock, who was selected 36 spots after the Giants picked Daniel Jones sixth overall at the 2019 NFL Draft. Lock recorded seven touchdowns and three interceptions since returning from injury in Week 13.
