Friday’s scheduled Subway Series opener at Citi Field has been postponed, as has Thursday night’s scheduled Mets-Marlins game in Miami, after one Mets player and one staffer tested positive for COVID-19.
“Right when I got back into the clubhouse from the postgame presser, I heard the news and the postponements started to roll in,” Boone said in his second post-game presser. “All they’ve told us is tomorrow is canceled. I’m sure they’re trying to get their arms around it and figure out how to proceed.”
The Mets already had their Pregame Show on the air on sister station WCBS 880 AM when the news broke, as game time was scheduled to be 6:10 p.m., and show host and WFAN Mets beat reporter Ed Coleman was skeptical about the state of the rest of the Subway Series.
"I'm not sure whether the Mets will play this weekend," Coleman said. "They also have an off day on Monday so they could use that time to clear and possibly pick it up after that, but we don't know at this point in time exactly when they will resume playing."
The Mets were planning to fly back to New York after Thursday's game, but will be remaining in Miami, and it's not clear how long the team will have to stay in Florida.
So far, any COVID-related postponements have led to multiple-day losses around the league, but Boone said he would be okay if MLB determines it is safe to play any of the Subway Series this weekend.
“If we get to the point where we’re playing, I’ll feel safe that due diligence was done,” he said. “2020 is like no other year. In a way we knew what we signed up for, and we knew we were going to face challenges. One of the unfortunate things about this season is that these things are possible, and hopefully this isn’t something that spreads and becomes too serious.”
And, as Coleman noted to Boone's point, the COVID-19 shadow is always looming and could strike at any time.
"The Mets have honestly done a great job following protocol and keeping everybody in line so it's surprising to me honestly that this happened," Coleman said, "but I guess in the overall picture it's not that stunning, because we can see how prevelant this disease is and how easily it could be transmitted as well."
