Giants GM Dave Gettleman reiterated once again that he's not afraid to shake up the top 5 in next week's NFL Draft with a blockbuster trade.
Trading back from the fourth spot is a scenario Gettleman said he would "seriously entertain" during a conference call with reporters on Friday.
Gettleman has been unusually forthright about this position, making similar remarks in the weeks leading up to the seven-round draft bonanza, held virtually this year due to the coronavirus crisis.
The Giants could use help on both sides of the ball, including one of the several coveted offensive tackles populating the top 15 or so on most mock draft boards. They could surely nab one of those young studs at No. 4 -- Alabama's Jedrick Wills, Andrew Porter of Georgia, Louisville's Mekhi Becton, and Tristan Wirfs of Iowa -- to potentially anchor their line for a decade.
But they still might also be able to get one of them and get an extra draft pick for their trouble, if they were to trade into the middle of the round or so.
Of course, NFL teams are notorious for sending up smoke screens to protect their closely guarded secrets come draft time. For weeks, Gettleman's been saying the Giants are "open for business," a phrase we've heard a lot lately.
Time will tell if he means it.
