Giants HC Says Daniel Jones 'Is Going To Learn,' Rules Out Benching

Don't expect Giants head coach Pat Shurmur to revert back to his veteran quarterback, Eli Manning, if the team's downward trend persists.

Daniel Jones had the Giants off to an electrifying start since being named the Giants' starting quarterback in Week 3, winning his first two games. Since then, however, Jones' miscues — five interceptions and three fumbles — spotlight New York's three-game slide.

Shurmur was asked about Jones' job security in the aftermath of the Giants' 27-21 loss to Arizona. He quickly shot down any possibility that the 2019 first round draft pick would return to the bench in favor of Manning, citing the potential growth from his mistakes

"No," Shurmur told reporters. "I think Daniel is going to learn from everything that's going on. Just like all of the other rookies playing, they're going to learn from what happened. You have to learn and you have to win games. I'm well aware of that. Totally well aware of that."

Jones threw one interception in Sunday's loss. He attempted to connect with Golden Tate, but Cardinals linebacker Jordan Hicks cut the route and secured the turnover on the Giants' opening drive.

"I think I'm making progress in some areas," Jones said after the game. "I still need to improve a lot in others but taking care of the ball is a big thing. To not do that today is disappointing. I've got to do better there."

Jones is third among rookie quarterbacks with six touchdowns and 1,144 yards this season. His seven interceptions are the most among rookies. The Giants fell to 2-3 under Jones — 2-5 overall — and sit third in the NFC East.
