Sports rivalries run deep, but life circumstances circumvent those ties sometimes – see also the White Sox fan whose organ donation helped save a Cubs fan’s life.

Friday brought another one of those cases, as the New York Giants and head coach Joe Judge, sent out official well-wishes to Washington head coach Ron Rivera, who announced this week that he had been diagnosed with Squamous cell sarcoma.

In a statement released on Twitter, Judge said that “we compete against each other weekly on the field,” but “when you hear news like this, we are all on the same team.”

The Giants and Judge were two of many teams and coaches, including Rivera’s old franchise in Carolina, to send well wishes to Rivera. Judge’s statement also said that “I look forward to seeing him on the field competing this fall,” and that is indeed Rivera’s plan; the first-year DC head coach plans to undergo treatment five times a week for the next seven weeks, and plans on coaching as he fights what he termed “a very treatable and very curable” form of cancer.

If he is unable to coach at any point this season, NFL Network reported that Washington will turn to defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio as an interim head coach.
