Reports: Giants To Sign Ex-Packers LB Martinez, Former 49ers TE Toilolo

The Giants have made another move aimed at upgrading their defense, reportedly agreeing to terms with former Packers inside linebacker Blake Martinez late Monday night.

According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, Martinez will sign a three-year, $30 million contract with Big Blue.

They also are expected to sign former 49ers tight end Levine Toilolo, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

Martinez, a fourth-round draft pick out of Stanford in 2016, has emerged as one of the NFL's surest tacklers, registering 155 tackles last season despite playing part of the year with a broken hand. He had 144 tackles in both '18 and '17. He ranked second in the league in tackles each of the last two seasons and tied for the lead in 2017.

The 6-foot-2 237-pounder also has three career interceptions and 10 sacks -- eight coming in the past two years.

Martinez, 26, is the second addition the Giants have made to their defense since the legal tampering period began Monday. They also have reportedly agreed to terms with former Panthers cornerback James Bradberry on a three-year, $45 million contract.

The Giants also added Martinez' Green Bay teammate Kyler Fackrell. In 2018, Fackrell recorded a career-high 42 tackles and he'll reportedly join the Giants on a one-year, $4.6 million deal.

In another move Monday, the Giants placed their franchise tag on defensive lineman Leonard Williams, whom they acquired in a trade last season from the Jets.

In 2019, the Giants, who finished 4-12, had the NFL's 25th-ranked defense, allowing 377.3 yards per game. Only two teams gave up more points than New York.

But as the Toilolo deal proves, Big Blue is not ignoring the other side of the ball. Toilolo will earn $6.2 million across two seasons, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo

Toilolo, 28, was a fourth-round pick by the Falcons in 2013 and spent his first five seasons in Atlanta, where he was a starter, before playing one year in each Detroit and San Francisco.

In 13 games last season with the 49ers, the 6-foot-8, 268-pound tight end only caught two passes for 10 yards, but he is known largely for his blocking skills and fills a need after Rhett Ellison announced his retirement last week.

Toilolo's best season as a receiver came with the Falcons in 2014, when he caught 31 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns.

Free agents cannot sign contracts with their new teams until 4 p.m. Wednesday.
