The New York Giants waived/injured running back Paul Perkins on Thursday, two weeks after he underwent pectoral surgery.
While the Giants cited Perkins' injury, suffered while training on his own before the start of their offseason program, the additions of Saquon Barkley and Jonathan Stewart certainly didn't help his chances.
A fifth-round draft pick out of UCLA in 2016, Perkins showed promise as a rookie, rushing for 456 yards and catching 15 passes for 162 yards. He had 102 yards rushing in the season finale at Washington, his lone start of the season.
But after being given a greater role in the offseason to start the 2017 season, Perkins struggled badly, rushing for just 90 yards on the season while averaging 2.2 yards per carry. He was eventually phased out of the offense.
After finishing with the NFL's 26th-ranked rushing attack last season, the Giants signed Stewart, a former Carolina Panthers star, and used the second overall pick in the draft on Barkley out of Penn State. Second-year back Wayne Gallman is also back.
