Heyman On WFAN: Yankees Most Likely Team To Sign Dallas Keuchel

By WFAN.com

The Major League Baseball season is into the second week of May, but two big name free agents still remain unsigned.

Both Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel are still looking for new teams to employ their services. Both players haven’t been snatched up as no teams were willing to meet their financial demands this offseason.

But now teams around the league are dealing with injuries and the general struggles of the season, which could put Keuchel and Kimbrel back in-demand.

On Thursday, WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman went on “Joe & Evan” to say that he thinks the Yankees have the best shot at signing Dallas Keuchel.

“I think the Yankees will be there for Keuchel," said Heyman. "I think at this point there's not a bad chance that the Yankees end up with Keuchel. Keuchel, from what I understand, would love to be in a big market, and the suitors for the most part to this point have not been of that ilk ... if I had to pick one team out of the 30 right now, I would go with the Yankees."

Injuries have taken quite a toll on New York this season. The Yankees have more than a dozen players on the injured list, including key pitchers Luis Severino and James Paxton.

Paxton’s injury is minor, but Severino was transferred to the 60-day injured list on 25. He will be out for quite a while, leaving Aaron Boone's team with some possible pitching issues.

Keuchel is 31-years-old and had spent his entire career with the Houston Astros before this season. Last year, he went 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA. He has fallen off a bit since he won the AL Cy Young award in 2015, but he would still provide some much needed depth to the Yankees’ rotation.

Heyman picked the day of the MLB Draft as when he thinks both Keuchel and Kimbrel will eventually sign with new teams.

“I think at this point we’re looking at most likely draft day, which is when that draft pick compensation goes away, it’s no longer a hinderance in their free agency. I think they will, maybe on that very day.”
