Newly acquired Yankees pitcher J.A. Happ won't be available for this week's big four-game series against the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees placed the left-hander on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with hand, foot and mouth disease. The move was made retroactive to July 30.

Happ had been scheduled to face Nathan Eovaldi in Saturday's game at Fenway Park. General manager Brian Cashman said Luis Cessa will likely start Saturday unless he's needed out of the bullpen in the series' first two games.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is not considered serious. Symptoms include uclers, sores around the mouth, a rash or blisters. It is most commonly found in children under 10 years of age.

"Unfortunately, he's just going through something that you wish he wasn't going through," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told WFAN. "And we'll adjust, and the only thing I keep stressing to J.A. is 'your health is first and foremost.' And we've got to let this take its course, and our season will continue, and he'll rejoin us at some point. But hopefully he'll be better sooner than later."

Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard also recently came down with viral infection after working at a children's baseball clinic.

It's not clear how Happ contracted it. According to a recent Miami Herald article, he has a 2 1/2-year-old son and 8-month-old daughter.

The Yankees acquired Happ in a trade with the Blue Jays last week in exchange for infielder Brandon Drury and minor league outfielder Billy McKinney. In his Yankees debut Sunday, Happ allowed one run on three hits over six innings in a 6-3 win over the Royals.

For the season, the 35-year-old Happ is 11-6 with a 4.05 ERA.

The Yankees and Red Sox square off in the first game of the series Thursday night. Boston has a 5 1/2-game lead over New York for the AL East lead.

The Yankees also announced Thursday that they've recalled pitcher Luis Cessa and infielder Luke Voit from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned Tyler Wade to the Triple-A. Voit is in the lineup for Thursday night.
