At 4-7, playoffs are a longshot for the Jets, but sitting on a three-game win streak, the team has been reluctant to place their high-priced linebacker C.J. Mosley on IR. Mosley again did not practice for the Jets Friday, and remains unlikely to play Sunday against the Bengals.
The 27-year old linebacker has been limited to just two games this season because of a groin injury. IR and surgery still have not been ruled out for Mosley, but he did increase his rehab work, according to Jets Insider Eric Allen.
On Monday, the Jets started a different part of Mosley's rehab program with some running & other things. We'll see if Gase has an update MON.With a player of that stature, you're going to do everything you can to get him back. @TreyDeuce32RTR is a warrior https://t.co/BvC9tVVEPP
— Eric Allen (@eallenjets) November 29, 2019"They kind of started a different part of the program, some running and some other things that they're trying to do," said head coach Adam Gase. "I haven't really gotten an update on that. I know they were going to go through this week and kind of see where he is."
In March, the Jets signed Mosley to a five-year, $82.5-million contract to anchor their defense. Mosley's Jets' career started strong with two takeaways and a touchdown in Week 1, but the linebacker injured his groin during the third quarter, causing him to miss the next four games.
Mosley returned Week 7 for the Jets' Monday Night Football matchup with the Patriots, but the linebacker didn't have his usual speed, power and defensive impact. For the first time in 79 career games, Mosley was unable to record a tackle during the game. The Pro-Bowl linebacker has been sidelined since his poor showing against the Patriots.
Prior to signing with the Jets, Mosley missed just three games during his entire career, but Sunday will be his tenth DNP of the season.
Jets linebacker Neville Hewitt returned from injury in Week 10 against the Redskins and has impressed while filling in for Mosley.
While Mosley continues to be sidelined, cornerback Darryl Roberts is expected to be healthy enough to dress after missing the last three weeks with a calf injury. But with the recent emergence of Bless Austin and Arthur Maulet, along with slot corner Brian Poole, Roberts might have trouble finding time on the field.
