Jamal Adams has at least one supporter within the Jets organization.
Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams threw his support behind Adams' demand for a new contract on Thursday – which has deteriorated into the All-Pro safety demanding to be traded, with a particular interest in the Cowboys.
"You never, ever mess with a guys contract," Williams said, per multiple reports. "Let them get it taken care of, have their back; I got his back on those type of things."
Williams is entering his second season as the Jets defensive coordinator and oversaw Adams put together the best season of his young career last year, finishing with 6.5 sacks, 75 tackles, two forced fumbles, including one recovered for a touchdown, and one interception – also returned for a touchdown.
"I think the world of him," Williams said. "I've had the chance to coach a lot of really good players, some already in the Hall of Fame and many others that are going to go into the Hall of Fame. He has a legitimate chance, if he stays health, to be one of those guys later on that we'll all talk about."
Adams is entering the fourth season on his rookie deal and wants an extension, but the Jets have proven to be in no rush to grant him one – leading to a trade request last week.
But Williams sounded like someone who was optimistic he will be coaching Adams again come the fall despite the fact that irreparable damage may have already been done.
"I want him to feel good about everything going on, and he knows once he gets in those doors and inside the white lines with us there is a chemistry that is outstanding," Williams said. "In all honesty, I've been through this before with other players, you can't get too emotional, I cant', you have to stay level-headed. I love coaching him and I have his back."
