Ryan Griffin has been one of the surprise stories for the Jets in 2019, but now his season is coming to an end a few games early.
The 29-year-old tight end had played in every game for the Jets during his first year with the team, up until this injury. Griffin hurt his ankle in Sunday's win over the Dolphins, and the Jets announced Thursday that he has been placed on injured reserve.
As a corresponding move, offensive lineman Brent Qvale has been activated.

— New York Jets (@nyjets) December 12, 2019In 13 games, Griffin had reeled in 34 catches for 320 yards and five touchdowns. His emergence as a reliable option for Sam Darnold also earned him a multi-year contract extension back in November.
Griffin was a quiet addition to the Jets in July after he was let go by the Texans. He spent the first six years of his career in Houston, but he had been producing at a higher level with New York since his arrival. The five touchdowns he caught this year represent a career-high for Griffin.
The Jets have picked things up a little bit towards the end of the season to improve on their record, but they're still 5-8. There isn't much left for Adam Gase and company to play for this year, so it makes sense to shut Griffin down for the season. His new contract means he's set to play a big role in next year's campaign as well.
It will be up to the front office to continue building the offense around Darnold, Griffin, and the other promising pieces in place.
