The Jets have officially given up on Devin Smith.
The team released the 26-year-old wide receiver Monday. Smith was drafted out of Ohio State in the second round in 2015, but hasn't seen much playing time. He played 10 games in 2015 and only four in 2016, recording 10 receptions and a touchdown throughout his entire professional career.
Smith suffered two torn ACLs in the same knee and has struggled to recover. Injuries have been an issue throughout Smith's career. As a rookie, he suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung on the second day of training camp.
The Jets waived/injured Smith last season, but he returned to their injured reserve after no team claimed him. By releasing him now, the Jets save around $1.2 million in cap space.
Smith was not likely to make the 53-man roster regardless. The Jets will enter training camp with Quincy Enunwa, Robby Anderson, Jermaine Kearse, Terrelle Pryor, ArDarius Stewart, Chad Hansen and others competing at wide receiver.
