The Jets have parted ways with running back Elijah McGuire, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The decision to release McGuire comes a day after the Jets' final preseason game against Philadelphia. McGuire led the Jets with 14 carries and 29 yards in the 6-0 win, but it wasn't enough to convince the Jets brass to hold onto the Louisiana native.
McGuire just celebrated his 25th birthday in June and was heading into his third season with the Jets. He burst onto the scene in 2017 after the Jets selected the running back in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. He tallied 591 rushing yards and six total touchdowns in two seasons with the Jets but found himself vying for a position throughout the preseason.
Le'Veon Bell and Ty Montgomery's arrival didn't help McGuire's case as they bumped him down the team's depth chart. With longtime RB Bilal Powell and Trenton Cannon, who is entering his second season, McGuire became the odd man out in the Jets' backfield.
UPDATE: The Browns signed Elijah McGuire to their practice squad, according to ESPN's Jake Trotter.
Take a look at the other notable moves the Jets have made since the conclusion of the preseason:
- Jets signed safety Matthias Farley, who was waived by the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 26. Farley played in 37 games through his first three seasons with the Colts. He even celebrated his signing on social media, saying he's "hyped to be a Jet' as Jay-Z's 'Empire State of Mind' plays in the background.
- Jets waived safety Santos Ramirez. The team originally re-signed Ramirez on Aug. 27 after waiving him in favor of LB Stephone Anthon.
- Offensive guard Jordan Morgan was cut, according to NJ Advance Media's Darryl Slater. He was signed as a free agent in February.
- Defensive lineman MyQuon Stout has been cut. The 23-year-old signed with the Jets in April.
- OL Ryan Anderson was released. He signed a deal with the Jets on July 30.
- Jachai Polite was cut, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. The Jets selected Polite with the 68th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
- Other notable Jets' cuts: QB Davis Webb, TE Eric Tomlinson, WR Deontay Burnett
