Jets Sign Former Rams Kicker Sam Ficken

Stop us if you've heard this one before: The Jets have signed a kicker.

Gang Green added Sam Ficken on Tuesday. He is now the fourth kicker the Jets will have used since the start of training camp.

The 26-year-old has spent time with the Jaguars, Chiefs, Rams, Seahawks and Packers. He has kicked in only four regular season games -- two in 2017 and two in 2018, all with the Rams while replacing the injured Greg Zuerlein. In those games, Ficken was 3-of-6 on field goals and 14-of-15 on extra points. His career long field goal is 34 yards.

The Penn State product spent this past preseason with the Packers, going 1-of-1 on field goals (a 41-yarder) and 5-of-5 on extra points. Green Bay waived him during final cuts.

Kicker has been a major concern for the Jets. They let Pro Bowler Jason Myers walk to Seattle in free agency this offseason. They brought back Chandler Catanzaro, who was their kicker in 2017, but he abruptly retired after missing two extra points in the preseason opener. The Jets then signed Taylor Bertolet, who was 5-of-8 on field goals and missed two extra point tries himself in the preseason.

Just before the start of the regular season, the Jets released Bertolet and signed Kaare Vedvik, who started the preseason with the Ravens and was then traded to the Vikings for a fifth-round pick before being cut by Minnesota. Vedvik missed an extra point and a field goal in the Jets' 17-16 season-opening loss to the Bills on Sunday. He was waived Tuesday.
