Jets Signing Tight End Ryan Griffin

The Jets look to have taken a step to try and deal with their depth issues at tight end.

According to multiple reports, the Jets are signing former Texans tight end Ryan Griffin. Griffin spent the first six years of his career in Houston before he was released back in May.

Adam Gase's team needed some other options at tight end, especially in the wake of the suspension to Chris Herndon. Herndon will miss the first four games of the regular season after violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. The suspension dates back to an incident in June of 2018 when Herndon admitted to driving while intoxicated.

Griffin joins the Jets on the eve of the beginning of their new season. Training camp gets underway on Thursday with the team's first practice.

In 2018, Griffin played in 14 games and had 24 receptions for 305 yards. He was initially a sixth-round pick in Houston, and has seven touchdowns in his career thus far.

Griffin's release from the Texans may have also been partially because of his arrest in April. Griffin was booked for public intoxication and vandalism after he apparently punched a window in his hotel room.

Daniel Brown, Eric Tomlinson and Trevon Wesco are the other tight ends currently on the Jets roster. They will be competition for Griffin throughout the preseason.

The Jets will first exhibition game is on August 8th against the Giants.
