The Jets traded linebacker Darron Lee, a former first-round draft pick, to the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday night in exchange for a 2020 sixth-round selection, WFAN's Brian Costello confirmed.

The deal, which is pending a physical, came hours after coach Adam Gase was named interim general manager in the wake of the startling Mike Maccagnan firing. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report on the trade.

Lee was the 20th overall pick in the 2016 draft out of Ohio State. In three seasons with the Jets, he played in 40 games (36 starts) and recorded 238 tackles and four sacks. Last season, the 6-foot-1, 232-pound linebacker had 74 tackles and three interceptions before being suspended the final four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Lee has one year left on his rookie contract and is set to make $1.8 million next season.

Just after Maccagnan was fired as GM on Wednesday, Lee tweeted "Good afternoon everybody" with a smiley face emoji, which some speculated was his way of acting giddy about the news. He later deleted it.
